John W. Dean, Counsel to President Richard Nixon from July 1970 to April 1973, was the 2011 Holland Program speaker. He spoke to a large audience at Douglass Campus Center on November 16th . Dean's talk, called, "Ethics, Law, and Government: Drawing the Right Lessons from Watergate," provided an insider's look at the Nixon administration and revealed stories not widely known about its inner workings. Dean spoke about the key factors that lead to Watergate and the scandal's impact subsequent American politics and governance.

Short Bio of John W. Dean
John Dean was Counsel to President Richard Nixon from July 1970 to April 1973. Prior to that, he served as Associate Deputy Attorney General, Chief Minority Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee and Associate Director of a law reform commission.

After graduating from the College of Wooster with majors in English literature and political science, Dean received a graduate fellowship from American University to study government and the presidency and then entered Georgetown University Law Center where he received his J.D. in 1965.

Dean is currently an author, columnist and commentator on law, government and politics. His writings include Blind Ambition and Lost Honor on the Nixon Whitehouse and Watergate as well as the more recent books The Rehnquist Choice: The Untold Story of the Nixon Appointment that Redefined the Supreme Court; Warren G. Harding, Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush; Conservatives Without Conscience; and, his latest, Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches.
