Formerly the Prosecutor of Morris County and a candidate for Governor of New Jersey, Michael Murphy is a registered lobbyist and partner at Impact NJ Government Affairs. He has been involved in politics since the first gubernatorial campaign of his stepfather, two-term NJ Governor and Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard J. Hughes.

An early adviser to President Barack Obama’s Democratic primary bid in New Jersey, Murphy has been identified repeatedly by PolitickerNJ on its annual Power List as one of New Jersey’s “100 Most Politically Influential Personalities,” and New
Jersey Monthly has listed him in its “Power Issue” of the Garden State’s most influential people. In 2007, he served as treasurer of the successful reelection campaign of his brother, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes. Murphy has been a guest commentator on Hardball with Chris Matthews and on CNBC, MSNBC, My9, FOX, truTV, NJN, News12 NJ, and other cable and radio outlets.

Murphy holds a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Seton Hall Law School, and he is a graduate of the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court, and he is a Life Fellow of the American Bar.

In 2005, then-Governor Codey appointed Murphy to the Garden State Preservation Trust, which he chairs. Murphy also serves on the board of directors of D.A.R.E. New Jersey, and he previously served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Public Policy Center of New Jersey. In addition, he is president of the Richard J. Hughes Foundation.
