of Congress; statewide elected officials; state legislators;
and mayors and council members in cities with populations
over 30,000. |

Surveyed
young elected officials to learn about their backgrounds,
interests,
issue positions, experiences in politics, and aspirations.

Convened
a conference in May 2003, entitled "Political Generation
Next: America's Young Elected Leaders", for 47 young
elected officials who discussed how and why they became
involved
in politics. |

|
Informed
the public about our findings in the hopes that they will
be used
to encourage greater political participation among young people.
