Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellows Program

The Eagleton Institute awards eight Raimondo Fellowships annually. These fellows enroll in the Legislative Policy Making seminar in the fall. During the spring semester, four fellows are placed with the New Jersey Senate and Assembly Democratic and Republican offices and four are placed with the Office of Legislative Services.

This program was initiated by the Legislature and Rutgers University to honor the memory of Henry J. Raimondo (1947-1999), who served as associate director and professor at the Eagleton Institute. Raimondo fellowships offer a stipend of $8,625 and an equivalent amount of tuition remission. (These awards are contingent upon funding being included in the FY09 New Jersey state budget.)

The Fellowship Year

   *

Fall Semester

  Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellows begin the program in the fall semester enrolling in Legislative Policy Making, a three-credit graduate course in the Public Policy Program taught at the Eagleton Institute by Professor Alan Rosenthal. Students are also required to participate in a one-day orientation session in Trenton.

   *  Spring Semester
  In the spring semester, the Fellows serve as interns in the legislature, complementing their academic study with hands-on practical experience in state government. The spring semester placement requires 15 hours a week, which must include a Friday and one other day. In addition, Fellows attend monthly group meetings in Trenton. The placements include:
     one in the Senate Majority Office,
     one in the Senate Minority Office,
     one in the Assembly Majority Office,
     one in the Assembly Minority Office,
     and four in the Office of Legislative Services.

In the spring, Fellows also enroll for three credits of independent study in their respective disciplines and work with faculty members in their schools or disciplines, making the connection between their legislative internship experiences and their chosen field of academic study.

Raimondo Fellows must maintain a B average during the year and remain in good academic standing in their disciplines.
