JON SHURE

Shure is president of New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that conducts research on state policy issues. Much of NJPP’s work centers on tax and budget topics; the organization’s mission is to inform and broaden debate in New Jersey by injecting a credible, progressive voice. NJPP originated the policy that became the “millionaires’ tax” in 2004. Jon Shure has been involved in New Jersey public affairs for over 30 years, beginning as a reporter for The Record newspaper in Bergen County. During 12 years at The Record, his assignments included coverage of state politics in the paper’s Trenton bureau and national politics in the Washington bureau. On leaving The Record, he served on the staff of the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Commerce, Competitiveness and Consumer Protection under Congressman Jim Florio.

Shure was press secretary for Florio’s 1989 campaign for Governor and communications director for Florio’s term as Governor. Before establishing New Jersey Policy Perspective in 1997 Jon Shure was a vice president at the Twentieth Century Fund (now The Century Foundation) in New York, a nonprofit engaged in research on national policy issues. Along with being a visiting associate at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, he has taught two courses in the Department of Political Science at Rutgers: New Jersey Politics and Mass Media and US Democracy. He served on the board of trustees of the Center for Nonprofit Corporations, was a member of the steering committee for the Coalition for Our Children’s Schools and is seminar director for Leadership New Jersey.

Shure was born in Syracuse, NY; he has a BS in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University and an MA in journalism from the University of Missouri. He lives in Ewing Township with his wife, Janice Conklin. Their son, Joseph, is a junior at Rutgers.
