Roper, currently director of the Planning Department at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was president of the Roper Group, a public policy consulting firm specializing in economic and social policy research and analysis from 1996 to 2007. His career in public affairs spans 36 years and includes an earlier position at the Port Authority when served as director of the Office of Economic and Policy Analysis. In this capacity, he managed a staff of 70 economists, statisticians, demographers, and business and public policy analysts responsible for assessing changes in the regional and national economy to determine their impact on Port Authority operations. Before becoming a Port Authority executive, Roper spent twelve years at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. There he served as assistant dean for graduate career services and governmental relations, director of the Program for New Jersey Affairs, executive director of the Council on New Jersey Affairs, and lecturer in public and international affairs. Prior to his Princeton University experience, Roper served as director of the Office of State and Local Government Assistance and as special assistant for intergovernmental relations in the Office of the Secretary, US Department of Commerce; director of the Office of Newark Metropolitan Studies; and legislative aide to the mayor of the City of Newark. Roper is the author of a number of articles on social, economic, political, and government operations issues. He holds a BA in economics from Rutgers and a MA in public affairs from Princeton.
